What is Shorinji Kempo?

Shorinji Kempo is a martial art for self defence and training both the mind and the body. Its teachings include a complete range of defence techniques that range from punches and kicks to throws and locks, a form of shiatsu massage [seiho], seated meditation and philosophy. 

  • practical self defence, available to a wide range of abilities 
  • fitness but with a bigger purpose
  • beneficial for the individual, and for those around you too

In every any situation, you can weaken your opponent’s position and strengthen your own. Practically anyone will be able to benefit from training at our club regardless of size, fitness, flexibility or experience / inexperience.

Bristol Shorinji Kempo Club is a member of the British Shorinji Kempo Federation and the International Kempo Association.

Goho – The Hard Way

This family of techniques comprises strikes – punches, kicks, cuts etc using hands and feet. Similar to the soft techniques the strength of an attacker is avoided by dodges and deflections.

Juho – The Soft Way

The soft techniques are the movements that involve continuous contact with your opponent and general involve escapes from being grabbed, and having the option to throw the opponent on the floor, and pin.

Seiho – Healing

Kempo includes healing and resuscitation techniques based on the same set of meridians used in traditional Chinese medicine. Making a positive contribution to society is key to the philosophy and this side of the martial art is a clear manifestation of this principle.

Howa – Philosophy

Our philosophy was created as a means to improve the life of people, and the world around them. In learning the techniques, meditating and thinking about the ideas you would expect to become more confident, have an increased sense of what is right and wrong, and also possess increased courage to uphold your beliefs.

Chinkon – Meditation

We meditate for a few minutes every session.  This calms and focuses the mind and helps to improve breathing control.
