Shao Lin Temple

Shao Lin Temple is a 1982 film starring Jet Li, Chunhua Ji and Henry Fong. In fact it was Jet Li’s debut role.

The film starts with documentary style information giving the story supposed historical basis. Of particular interest to readers of this blog may be the inclusion of footage of how Shorinji Kempo is descended from Shaolin Kung Fu, complete with the founder visiting a temple and Shorinji Kempo kenshi practicing at the headquarters of the martial art, hombu.

Sadly despite the initial few minutes, the Shorinji Kempo connection is never mentioned again and the film descends into the standard monk-revenge-love-monk trope. As far as I could tell, all the martial arts used were pure Chinese Kung Fu, with no Shorinji Kempo at all.

The main protagonist escapes from the Standard Bad Guy (TM) after the death of his father. He is taken in by the monks at Shao Lin, learns martial arts, and falls in love with a shepherdess (who also happens to be the daughter of one of the senior monks). He is not very good at being a monk.

With Buddha in your heart, wine and meat are nothing.

Later, he gets his revenge during an epic battle and then gives up his love to become a full monk.

Lovers of standard martial arts films will enjoy the long running fight scenes and poor dialogue. Haters of gratuitous violence against animals should avoid this film, as a dog is eaten and various sheep are slaughtered during a battle simply to annoy the shepherdess.

Original Japanese poster for the film. Shared as fair use.

I watched this film on Amazon, but it may be available other places.
