How to start

There are so many things to know when you first start a martial art, and Shorinji Kempo is no different. Here is a round up of all the tips we’ve given in the past year or two, carefully curated for your delight.

Starting out

What to wear. To start with, any sensible exercise clothes will do. Eventually you’re going to want a dogi and a pristine white belt.

What to do. In general, be polite to everyone and pay attention to the instructions. Anything you do “wrong” will be gently corrected because we were all beginners once.

What to say. A lot of the instructions are in Japanese, but don’t worry, you’ll get the hang of it pretty quickly. And at least to start with you don’t need to say the words, just recognise them!

Progressing in the art

What is the grading system in Shorinji Kempo? What do you need to do in order to get the most out of your time with a teacher?

Other Advice

Above all, don’t forget to have fun! If you aren’t enjoying it, you won’t stick at it. Talk to someone – there may be something we can do that will increase your happiness, but we won’t know to try unless you tell us!
